JLPTMatome V3 is coming on November 1, 2026
Hello everyone, it’s Louis, as usual!
After months of work on the new version of JLPTMatome, I can finally share a release date with you: November 1, 2026.
There’s quite a lot to show you, and I’m looking forward to seeing you try it. Before then, I wanted to give you a look at what’s changing and explain how the move will work if you already have an account.
What’s changing in V3
JLPTMatome started with Japanese study resources. V2 added accounts, flashcard drills, and JLPT simulations, so you could save your results and follow your progress. Those tools are still here in V3, with a new design and quite a few improvements.
You’ll be able to review your past session results to see what you’re doing well and what needs more practice. The JLPT simulation questions have also been renewed, with particular attention to the audio, to help you get more out of your preparation.
For flashcard drills, you’ll have more control over how each session runs. You can create your own decks, choose which decks to practise from, and set the percentage of past mistakes and new content in each drill. That way, you can spend more time on what you need to work on, or focus on learning something new.
The biggest addition is the community. You’ll be able to start discussions, ask questions, and get to know other people learning Japanese. There’s also the Arena, where you can challenge other learners, along with rankings if you enjoy a little competition.
You’ll find daily challenges and streak rewards, too. As you study, you’ll earn XP and move through levels. You’ll also have your own Daruma character, which you can dress up with outfits from the shop using study coins.
I wanted to give you more to do around your usual study sessions, and more opportunities to meet the people studying alongside you. I’m especially curious to see the discussions you’ll start once V3 launches.
Your account and JLPTMatome Plus subscription
If you’re already a member, your account and study progress will move to V3 automatically. You don’t need to do anything. When the new website opens, you can return with your existing account.
The same goes for your JLPTMatome Plus subscription. It will carry over automatically, so there’s no need to create another account or subscribe again. And to everyone who supports JLPTMatome through a subscription, thank you. It helps make this work possible.
One change you’ll notice is that V2’s study points become XP in V3. XP is how you follow your progress through the new levels. The transfer will be handled for you, so there’s nothing to convert or claim yourself.
You’ll also see study coins mentioned around the site. These are separate from XP and are used in the shop for things like Daruma outfits.
Maintenance from October 30 to November 1
The website will be unavailable from October 30 until V3 launches on November 1, 2026.
This gives us time to transfer the account data, check that everything has moved over correctly, and finish testing and fixing any remaining bugs before reopening.
I know a break in access can interrupt your study routine, so please keep these dates in mind. Thank you for your patience while we get everything ready.
The app is ready, too
There’s another piece of news I’ve been looking forward to sharing: the JLPTMatome iOS app is finalized.
We’re aiming to release it on November 1, alongside the website. That date isn’t confirmed for the app yet, but I’ll keep you updated. The Android version will follow soon after.
Thanks for being here, whether you’ve used JLPTMatome for years or have only just found the site. I’m happy to finally be able to share all of this with you.
See you on November 1!
Louis
