What it means
ほうがましだ expresses a reluctant preference: one option is considered less bad or more tolerable than another. It often follows a verb in the た-form to mean “it would be better to do,” or a negative form to mean “it would be better not to do.” It can also compare noun choices with のほうがましだ. The expression often conveys resignation, criticism, or that all available choices are undesirable. Its polite counterpart is ほうがましです.
Usage note
ほうがましだ is stronger and more resigned than ほうがいい, which usually gives straightforward advice or expresses a positive preference. A comparison with より or a conditional phrase such as くらいなら is often used to make the rejected alternative explicit.
How to use it
沈黙より、説明のほうがましです。
An explanation is better than silence.
一人で抱え込むより、信頼できる人に相談したほうがましです。
Rather than keeping it to myself, it is better to consult someone I trust.
中途半端に謝るくらいなら、何も言わないほうがましです。
If the alternative is apologizing halfheartedly, it is better to say nothing.
