What it means
にして is a formal N1 construction with two related uses. After a noun or pronoun, it can emphasize that only that person or type of person can achieve or understand something, commonly in the pattern にして初めて, meaning “only after or through being that.” After a quantity or time expression, it means “in only” or “within,” highlighting that an outcome was achieved in a surprisingly short span. The construction is especially common in formal writing, analytical statements, and elevated descriptions.
Usage note
にして should not be confused with にしては, which means “for” or “considering.” In the meaning “only,” にして is often followed by 初めて, although the surrounding context can make the emphasis clear without it.
