What it means
さも is an adverb that presents an appearance or manner as strikingly genuine, often with the nuance of “as if” or “seemingly.” It commonly combines with そうに or かのように to describe someone acting as though a feeling or situation were real. Depending on context, it can also add strong emphasis equivalent to “indeed” or “really,” but in many modern constructions it creates some distance between the apparent situation and the speaker’s judgment of it.
Usage note
さも often suggests that the appearance is affected, exaggerated, or not entirely trustworthy, so it is stronger and more distancing than a neutral expression such as “looking pleased.” Do not interpret it as a simple intensifier in every context.
