What it means
とばかりに describes an action or manner that appears to express a thought, intention, or attitude, although it is not stated directly. It is similar to “as if to say” or “as though,” and often presents someone’s behavior from an observer’s perspective. It commonly follows a plain-form verb or clause and is especially useful in descriptive and written contexts.
Usage note
とばかりに does not mean that the preceding words were literally spoken. For an explicit “as if saying” nuance, it is often contrasted with と言わんばかりに, which more directly evokes an unspoken statement.
Example sentences
彼はもう十分だとばかりに、書類を机の端へ押しやった。
As if to say that was enough already, he pushed the documents to the edge of the desk.
猫は自分の場所を取られたとばかりに、窓辺で毛を逆立てた。
The cat bristled its fur by the window as if its spot had been taken.
