What it means
ざる is a formal, literary negative form meaning “not” or “un-.” It attaches to a verb’s negative stem and most often modifies a following noun or appears in established constructions. It is common in written language, official statements, academic prose, and set phrases rather than in ordinary conversation. For する, the form is せざる.
Usage note
ざる has no direct polite variant as the same grammar item; polite writing usually uses a modern negative form such as ない or ません instead. Do not confuse ざる with ず in ずにはいられない, which is a separate construction.
