What it means
上は expresses a firm conclusion or responsibility that follows from an established fact, decision, or situation. It can mean “now that” or “since,” often with the nuance that the speaker must act consistently with what has already been accepted or decided. It commonly follows a plain verb, especially the past form, and it can also follow a noun or a な-adjective with である. The main clause often describes an obligation, determination, or unavoidable consequence.
Usage note
上は is more formal and resolute than ordinary causal expressions such as から or ので. Do not confuse it with 上で, which means “after doing” or “in the process of doing.” The expression itself does not change for politeness; politeness is shown in the final predicate.
