What it means
ざるを得ない expresses that someone cannot avoid doing something and therefore has no choice but to do it. It presents the action as compelled by circumstances, obligations, or a lack of alternatives. The expression is formal and is especially common in writing, official statements, and serious discussions. It normally attaches to a verb’s negative stem, although the negative stem of する becomes せ, producing せざるを得ない.
Usage note
ざるを得ない is considerably more formal than ordinary expressions such as しかない. It is used with verbs, not directly with nouns or adjectives. Because the expression contains a negative element, the resulting meaning is affirmative compulsion: the action must be done.
