What it means
かのように means “as if” or “as though.” It presents an imagined situation or appearance, often suggesting that the situation is not literally true or that the speaker is making a comparison rather than stating a fact. It commonly follows a plain-form verb, an i-adjective, or a noun or na-adjective with である. It is relatively formal and is especially common in written, explanatory, and literary language. The adverb まるで is often used before the phrase for emphasis.
Usage note
かのように connects to a clause and commonly modifies a following action or state. When the comparison modifies a noun, use かのような, and when it ends the sentence, use かのようだ or a polite equivalent such as かのようです.
