What it means
〇〇にしては expresses an unexpected comparison: judging from 〇〇, the result or quality is higher, lower, or otherwise different than expected. It can be translated as “for 〇〇” or “considering 〇〇.” Nouns attach directly, な-adjectives use their stem before にしては, and い-adjectives use the complete plain form, not the adjective stem. Verbs and clauses generally use the plain form. The predicate after にしては may be familiar or polite, while にしては itself does not change.
Usage note
Do not confuse にしては with にしても. にしては compares an actual result with an expectation based on a standard, whereas にしても means “even if” or “even though” and often introduces a concession.
