What it means
において marks the place, time, field, situation, or subject in which something occurs or is considered. It is a formal, mainly written expression and is often used in reports, presentations, announcements, and official writing. It is more formal than に and can often be translated as “in,” “at,” or “as for,” depending on the context.
Usage note
において is usually too formal for casual conversation. Do not confuse it with における, which modifies a following noun, as in 研究における問題 (a problem in the research).
