What it means
ように expresses a goal or intended result: “in order to” or “so that.” It commonly follows a verb in the dictionary form or nai form. It is especially natural when the result depends on ability, circumstances, or another person's action, rather than being completely under the subject's direct control. The clause before ように states the desired result, and the main clause states the action taken to achieve it.
Usage note
ように also has other uses, including “like” and “in a way that,” so the surrounding sentence determines its meaning. For a purpose that is a direct, controllable action by the same subject, ために is often a more natural alternative.
