What it means
一方だ follows a verb in the dictionary form to show that a change or trend keeps moving in the same direction. It often describes a situation that is steadily increasing, decreasing, worsening, or otherwise progressing without an apparent stop. The construction is commonly used for continuing trends and is often, though not always, associated with undesirable developments.
Usage note
一方だ does not normally mean “on one hand.” That meaning is usually expressed with 一方で or 一方では. 一方だ emphasizes a continuing one-directional trend.
