What it means
全然〇〇ない means “not at all” or “not in the slightest.” It emphasizes a complete absence or a very strong negative degree. It normally appears before a negative verb, adjective, noun, or na-adjective predicate. The familiar form uses a plain negative ending, while the polite form changes the predicate to its polite negative equivalent.
Usage note
全然 is traditionally taught with negative predicates. Although positive uses such as 全然大丈夫 are common in modern informal Japanese, learners should first use this pattern with a clear negative predicate.
