What it means
さ turns an adjective into a noun that expresses a quality, degree, or state, similar to “-ness” or “-ity” in English. It commonly describes measurable or noticeable qualities, such as height, weight, kindness, or quietness. With an い-adjective, remove the final い before adding さ. With a な-adjective, add さ directly to the adjective stem. The resulting noun can be used with particles and in both familiar and polite sentences.
Usage note
さ is mainly used with adjectives, not ordinary nouns. Do not confuse it with み, which often refers to a felt or experienced aspect of a quality and is less freely formed.
