What it means
しかし means “however” and introduces a contrast with the statement before it. It commonly appears at the beginning of a new sentence or clause and is used in both speech and writing. It is somewhat more formal than でも, especially in everyday conversation.
Usage note
しかし does not itself mark politeness. The clauses around it should use the appropriate familiar or polite forms for the situation. In casual conversation, でも is often more natural.
