What it means
極めて means “extremely” or “exceptionally.” It is a formal adverb that presents a high degree as an objective or emphatic assessment, often in academic, professional, official, and written contexts. It commonly modifies adjectives, adjectival adverbial forms, and other adverbial expressions, and it can also intensify a verb phrase through such modifiers.
Usage note
極めて is considerably more formal than とても and is less common in casual conversation. It does not itself have a polite form; politeness is expressed by changing the predicate of the sentence.
