What it means
ものと思われる expresses an inference or considered judgment that something is likely to be true. It is more formal and impersonal than simply saying と思う, and it is common in reports, academic writing, official statements, and analytical prose. The construction presents the conclusion as a reasonable assessment rather than as the speaker’s openly stated personal opinion. It follows a plain verb or i-adjective, while a noun or na-adjective normally uses である before the construction.
Usage note
ものと思われる does not necessarily mean that a specific person literally thinks something; it often means that the available evidence suggests a conclusion. Do not confuse it with ものと思う, which more directly expresses the speaker’s belief or assumption. The polite counterpart ものと思われます is conventional, although both forms remain relatively formal.
