What it means
というか links an initial description with a more accurate, clarified, or slightly different description. It can mean “or,” “or rather,” or “more precisely,” and often signals that the speaker is revising the first expression rather than presenting two equal alternatives. It is especially common when the first characterization is approximate, emotionally loaded, or difficult to state directly. The expression itself does not change between familiar and polite speech; the surrounding clauses determine the register.
Usage note
というか can sound conversational because it presents an on-the-spot correction or qualification. In formal writing, use it only when this self-correcting nuance is intended; otherwise, a more explicit expression such as というより may be clearer.
