What it means
一方で connects two contrasting aspects, situations, or evaluations. It commonly means “on one hand ...; on the other hand ...” or “while ...,” and presents the second clause as a contrast to the first. It is especially common in organized speech and writing. Verbs and i-adjectives normally appear directly before 一方で, while nouns and na-adjectives commonly use である or な before it.
Usage note
一方で is different from 一方だ, which describes a continuing trend in one direction, such as something increasingly worsening. The two sides connected by 一方で do not have to be completely opposite; they may simply present contrasting characteristics of the same subject.
