What it means
よりも marks the standard of comparison, meaning “rather than,” “compared with,” or “more than.” In a pattern such as AよりもBのほうが..., B is usually the preferred, more suitable, or higher-degree item, while A is the comparison standard. よりも is slightly more emphatic than より and is common in both spoken and written Japanese. It can follow a noun or a plain clause, and it is often used with のほうが to identify the item being selected or judged more favorably.
Usage note
よりも does not normally mean that the phrase before it is preferred. The phrase after よりも is generally the item that ranks higher or is chosen more favorably in the comparison. When the comparison is about preference, the sentence may also use 好き or another evaluative expression instead of an adjective such as 速い or 過ごしやすい.
