What it means
によって follows a noun to show that a result varies depending on something, that an action is carried out by means of something, or that an event is caused by something. It can also follow a verb in dictionary form plus こと to mean “by doing.” This form is especially common in formal, written, academic, and informational language.
Usage note
によって is different from による, which modifies a following noun, and によっては adds the meaning “depending on” with an explicit conditional nuance. When expressing a simple cause in everyday conversation, ので or から is often more natural.
