What it means
だけど expresses contrast, usually meaning “but” or “however.” It commonly follows a noun or a na-adjective in familiar speech and connects that idea to a contrasting statement. It can also appear at the beginning of a sentence as a familiar transition. The contrast may be strong, but だけど can also soften a disagreement or introduce a qualification.
Usage note
だけど is familiar in register. The polite counterpart is ですが. After verbs and i-adjectives, the equivalent ending is usually けど rather than だけど, because those forms do not require だ before it.
