What it means
について marks the subject or topic that a statement, discussion, explanation, investigation, or other action concerns. It usually follows a noun or noun phrase and corresponds to “about,” “regarding,” or “concerning.” It is neutral and widely used in both spoken and written Japanese, although it can sound more structured than a simple conversational expression such as のことを.
Usage note
について attaches directly to a noun or noun phrase. When the subject is a verb- or adjective-based idea, nominalize it with こと or の before について, as in 勉強することについて.
