What it means
こと can mean a thing, matter, or fact as a noun. As a grammar pattern, it follows a clause and turns an action, situation, or statement into a noun-like unit. This unit can function as the subject or object of another sentence, often referring to an idea or fact in a general or abstract way. After a verb, こと follows the plain form. After an i-adjective, it follows the adjective directly, while a na-adjective takes なこと. A noun can be followed by であること when stating the fact that someone or something is a particular noun.
Usage note
Do not confuse clause + こと with clause + の. Both can nominalize a clause, but こと is often more abstract or formal, especially when stating a general fact. The pattern noun + のこと means matters concerning that noun or feelings toward that person or thing, and is a separate use.
