What it means
的 is a suffix that forms a na-adjective meaning “-al,” “pertaining to,” or “like.” It usually attaches to a Sino-Japanese noun and describes something as related to or characteristic of that noun. With な, it modifies another noun; with に, it modifies a verb adverbially; and with だ or です, it functions as the predicate of a sentence.
Usage note
的な is used before a noun, while 的に is used before a verb or adjective-like expression. 的 does not attach naturally to every noun, so established combinations such as 科学的, 現実的, and 合理的 are more natural than freely creating a form from an ordinary concrete noun.
