What it means
んです adds an explanatory or clarifying tone to a statement. It can present information as the reason for something, explain a situation, or invite the listener to understand the background. The familiar form is んだ, while the polite form is んです. The preceding word normally stays in its plain form.
Usage note
With nouns and な-adjectives, use な before んだ or んです. With verbs and い-adjectives, attach んだ or んです directly to the plain form. The familiar form んだ can sound firm or assertive, so んです is safer with people who require polite speech.
