What it means
ながら means “while doing” and links two actions that happen at the same time. The action before ながら is usually a verb in its masu-stem form, and the action in the main clause is the main focus. The subject of both actions is normally the same. The register of the sentence is determined by the main verb, so ながら itself does not change between familiar and polite sentences.
Usage note
ながら is mainly used for simultaneous actions with the same subject. Do not confuse it with the different use of ながら meaning “although,” which is usually taught separately.
