What it means
と connects nouns to mean “and” when listing items, and it marks a person or group who accompanies someone to mean “with.” In a list, と usually presents the items as a complete set. When it marks a companion, the following verb describes what the subject does together with that person or group. The particle itself does not change between familiar and polite sentences; the final verb changes to show politeness.
Usage note
と can also have other meanings, including marking quotations and conditions. For an incomplete list, や is often more appropriate than と, while “together with” can also be expressed with 一緒に.
