What it means
のほうが marks the preferred or greater side in a comparison. It usually follows a noun and means “more than,” “rather than,” or “the one that is more...” The other item is often marked with より, although it can be omitted when the comparison is clear. The expression itself does not change between familiar and polite speech; the predicate at the end of the sentence shows the register.
Usage note
のほうが is commonly used for a comparison between two choices or things. Do not confuse it with ほうが after an adjective or a verb, where there is no の before ほうが.
