What it means
がある and がいる express that someone has something or that something exists. Use がある for non-living things, such as objects, and がいる for people and animals. The person who has something is often marked with は or には, while the thing or living being possessed is marked with が. In polite speech, ある becomes あります and いる becomes います.
Usage note
Do not use がある for people or animals, and do not use がいる for objects. The choice depends on whether the possessed thing is living, not on whether the sentence means possession or existence.
