What it means
あげる, くれる, and もらう express giving and receiving, but the choice depends on whose point of view is used. あげる describes the subject giving something to another person. くれる describes another person giving something to the speaker or someone in the speaker's in-group. もらう describes the subject receiving something from another person. These are common verbs used with people, objects, and the particles に and を. The familiar forms are used in plain sentences, while the polite forms end in ます.
Usage note
The direction of the action is important. Use あげる from the giver's point of view, くれる when the speaker or the speaker's in-group receives the item, and もらう from the receiver's point of view. Do not treat these three verbs as interchangeable translations of "give" or "receive."
