What it means
たら expresses a condition or a situation that leads to a result. It can mean “if,” “when,” or “after,” depending on context. It follows a verb in its past form, an i-adjective with かったら, a na-adjective with だったら, or a noun with だったら. The result clause can be familiar or polite, while the たら clause itself normally stays in this plain form.
Usage note
たら does not always describe a past event. In a conditional sentence, the past-looking form is part of the grammar and may refer to a future situation. The meaning is decided by context.
