About JLPTMatome's flashcard drills
📚 What are flashcard drills?

On JLPTMatome, flashcard drills provide a structured way to review and reinforce your knowledge.

Each session generates a set of flashcards based on your chosen subject—whether it’s kanji, vocabulary, or grammar—by presenting partially filled information along with four possible answers.

🔀 Randomized Card Pile
Flashcard Drill Cards

Each session creates a fresh pile of 9 flashcards at random. This unpredictability ensures you're always challenged and allows you to practice a broad range of material.

🎮 How to play?

The front side of each flashcard displays partial information about an item.

Choose the correct answer from four options to complete the card.

With every selection, a new card is randomly shown.

Earn 1 point for every correct answer. Get the same card right 3 times in a row to mark it as complete.

If you get it wrong, the card goes back into the pile and must be answered correctly one more time.

Once all cards are completed, the flashcard drill ends.

🧪 Methodology
Japanese Flashcard Drill Session

Our flashcard drills rely on active recall and the spacing effect to support meaningful, long-term learning.

🧠 Active recall is the act of retrieving information from memory—like selecting the correct answer without hints. This process strengthens memory much more than simply rereading or reviewing.

⏳ The spacing effect involves reviewing material over multiple, spaced-out sessions rather than all at once. Revisiting content over time helps reinforce what you've learned and improves retention.

Here's how it works in practice:

  • At the end of each drill, your results are saved to your account.
  • Any flashcards you answered incorrectly are stored for future review.
  • In your next session, those past mistakes are mixed with new items.

This setup helps you actively recall previous mistakes at spaced intervals while continuing to explore new content—strengthening weak points and building confidence step by step.

🔎 Learn from past mistakes
Japanese Flashcard Drill Past Mistakes

Every time you miss a flashcard, it's automatically saved to your account.

You can find all your past mistakes in the “My Lists” section of your account.

Use that list to review and study items you struggled with—whenever you want. 📚

You can also choose to add these items to your study letter to receive them by email—randomly mixed with other content—to keep reviewing them effortlessly over time. ✉️

📊 Track your progress

Want to see how far you’ve come? You can track your flashcard drill progress over time directly from your account.

The “My Results” section gives you a full history of your past sessions.

It’s a great way to stay motivated and keep building on your learning journey. 📈
