What it means
させられる expresses the causative-passive meaning “to be made to do something.” It shows that the subject is forced or compelled by another person to perform an action, often with a sense of inconvenience or unwillingness. For ichidan verbs, it attaches to the masu stem, as in 食べさせられる. For godan verbs, the standard full form uses the causative form followed by られる, as in 書かせられる, not 書きさせられる. The same construction can be used in familiar and polite sentences by changing the final ending.
Usage note
Do not attach させられる directly to the masu stem of every verb. With godan verbs, use the causative form plus られる; for example, 読む becomes 読ませられる. Some godan forms also have shorter variants such as 読まされる, but the full させられる pattern is the form taught here.
